Best Buy Mobile is having a huge December sale, offering up one free phone (mostly Android) for each carrier, each day. You can get a free smartphone with the standard two year deal. Keep in mind you will not be getting top shelf stuff here but it’s a good deal if you are in the market for a budget level phone. Some of the Android phones are the HTC Droid Incredible and the LG Optimus S.

Press Release:

Best Buy® Announces Unprecedented Specials: Free Smart Phones Through December

New campaign offers customers the choice of free smart phones across all four major carriers

MINNEAPOLIS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Best Buy Mobile, the mobile specialty retail unit of Best Buy Co. Inc (NYSE:BBY), today announced that it is giving consumers another reason to celebrate – a holiday event featuring free smart phones. Every day in December, Best Buy Mobile will feature a minimum of four free smart phones (one from each carrier) in all Best Buy stores, in all Best Buy Mobile specialty stores and online at www.BestBuy.com/FreeSmartPhones.

Based on the overwhelming success and customer feedback from the Free Phone Fridays campaign in October, Best Buy will feature FREE smart phones every day during the remainder of the holiday shopping season. Examples of smart phones featured include:

Droid Incredible by HTC (Verizon)
Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 (AT&T)
LG Optimus S (Sprint)
LG Optimus T (T-Mobile)

“We were excited by the amount of consumer interest we received around our ‘Free Phone Fridays’ promotion in October, so we wanted to do it again only bigger,” said Shawn Score, president of Best Buy Mobile. “People want smart phones and we couldn’t think of a better way to end the year for our customers than to offer free devices every day in December.”

The free phones require new or upgrade activation with two-year agreement and minimum quantities will vary by store. There are no price matches and the offer is not valid on prior purchases.

No specific products were mentioned but it’s rumored that Sony Ericsson is diligintly working on an Android 3.0 mobile platform which also probably explains their need for some Android developers to join their ranks. For Sony, it’s a no brainer given that Android is the future OS of choice (at least for me)!
As you will see from the video below and probably from your own use, your Android device in direct sunlight is just not a good experience. Taking a look at the video, TFT LCD (an older screen technology) and Super AMOLED display technology seem to look a little better than AMOLED when put side by side under the same lighting conditions.

In this video, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 (TFT LCD), the HTC Desire (AMOLED), and the Samsung Galaxy S (Super AMOLED) were put head to head to compare their screen in bright lighting. The results are not surprising really, with the TFT Display on the Xperia X10 and the Super AMOLED screen of the Samsung Galaxy S allowing you to view text and images that much easier. As you would expect, the HTC Desire’s AMOLED screen didn’t fare as well as the others.
The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 which comes with Android 1.6 on-board, is not getting Android 2.1 until the fourth quarter of this year.

The Sony Ericsson Product Blog says the following improvements will be coming at the end of the year:

Upgrade to Android OS version 2.1

HD video recording as per the same execution as Sony Ericsson Vivaz

Wireless home connectivity via DLNA

Improvements to signature applications Timescape and Mediascape to make them even smarter and richer

Keep in mind those would be great improvements if they were coming today but by the last quarter of this year, is shall we say ridiculous! Almost a year after Android 2.1 came out it will be ready for the Xperia X10, give me a break!
