Attention all HTC Droid Eris users, your OTA update has begun to roll out, and it’s been confirmed that it fixes the ‘Silent Call’ issue. Keep in mind that it may take more than a week for all customers to get the MR4 update so if you don’t want to wait, you can get the file (direct from Google) right HERE, and install it via your HTC Droid Eris’ recovery menu. Keep in mind if you’re rooted or running a custom ROM, you need to wait for the update to be merged into your ROM by the developer.

For excellent and complete instructions on manually installing the update, head on over to Eugene O’Rourke’s site here: How to Manually Install Droid Eris MR4 Update.

Happy updating!

As we reported, some folks were starting to get the Android 2.2 update on their Nexus One’s. Well, if you are not one of the lucky ones or just don’t feel like waiting, below are instructions so you can download Android 2.2 and get your jive on!

Note: This seems to be only working for T-Mobile users so far and if you are currently rooted you should get yourself back to stock before running the update.

To manually install Android 2.2 on the Nexus One, perform the following steps:

Download the official Android 2.2 firmware for the Nexus One here.

Copy the file to your microSD card and name it update.zip ( not update.zip.zip)

Power off your phone.

Hold down the VOLUME DOWN button and power it back on.

The phone will now search for files like PB00IMG.zip, etc. This is normal. Scroll down to recovery and press the POWER button.

When you see the “/!\” symbol, press the POWER button and the Volume Up button at the same time. You should be presented with a menu and one of the options should be “Apply sdcard:update.zip”.

Use the trackball to navigate to “apply sdcard:update.zip” and select it.

When you see “Install from sdcard complete”, select “reboot system now”.

As you know, the Verizon Motorola Droid Android 2.1 update has started rolling but many haven not received the OTA update yet and quite frankly, don’t like to wait! Well, you’re in luck, you can now update manually.

Manually Update Droid to Android 2.1:

STEP 1
Download the update from one of the links below. (Mac users: Don’t use Safari as it may try to extract the files rather than just download them.)

STEP 2
Rename the file to update.zip.

STEP 3
Put the file in the root (main directory) of your microSD card.

STEP 4
With your Droid turned off, hold down the letter “x” on the keyboard and then hold down the power button. You will see a triangle with an exclamation point inside.

STEP 5
Press the volume up button and the camera button at the same time. (This is a bit tricky and make take a number of tries.)

STEP 6
You will now be in the bootloader. Choose “update from .zip file” and choose the update using the D-Pad. Let your Droid chug away and do what it needs to.

That is really all there is to it. You can now enjoy Android 2.1. Have fun and do remember, you are doing this at your own risk! Also, by installing this update, if your Droid was previously rooted you will lose root until Android 2.1 has been rooted for the Droid.

It’s time for some tips and tricks and this time we will be concentrating on Verizon’s HTC Droid Eris.  Whether you are a pro or just became the proud owner of this Android device, I’m sure you will find some useful tips and tricks. Below is a comprehensive list to get you started!

HTC Droid Eris Tips & Tricks:

Press and hold Call Button to activate the Voice Commands & Dialer

Press and hold the Power Button (End Call) hard key to view power, silence and WIFI options

Press and hold Menu Button and it will bring up the keyboard

To improve battery life, turn off GPS, WIFI & Bluetooth when they are not in use.  More importantly, make sure the screen is set to time out in a short period of inactivity.  The display is the single biggest drain on your battery!

While typing a message, hit the space bar twice and it will insert a period automatically.

Use one of your home screens to toggle gps, wifi, mobile network, and bluetooth on and off with one touch. Simply hold a open spot on your home screen to add widget, pick htc widgets, pick settings, then add whatever widget you need to control.

If you exit an application using the Home Button, it will not shutdown the application.  However, the Back Button usually does the trick.

Press & hold the “Call” button during a call to switch between headset & speakerphone

When watching a video on YouTube, press the “Menu” button and you can select “High Quality”

Instead of swiping the screen to unlock the phone, you can also press the “End” key followed by the “Menu” key

For battery information, dial (*#*#4636#*#*) on the keypad and press “Call”. Select “Battery Information”

Want to stop WiFi from sleeping? Click: Settings > Wireless Controls > Wifi Settings. Now Click: Menu > Click Advanced > Then Click: Wifi Sleep Policy > Click Never

To bypass entering your password for voicemail: Menu > Settings > Call Settings > Voicemail > *86PXXXX# (The x’s are your password)

To save an MMS: In your conversation, click and hold the message, not the picture itself. Now a box will pop up saying “Save Picture”.

While the phone is ringing you can silence it by turning the phone face down.

To switch between active apps, press and hold the Home key and it will show you the last six active apps

You can create folders in the same way you add a Widget (holding your finger on the desktop), just select “Folder” instead. You can then rename the folder by opening it and then pressing and holding the title bar of that folder. To drag apps into it, click on the  “up” arrow just above the Home button, find the app you want to add, press and hold it and drag it to the folder in which you want to place it.

To move Widgets and shortcuts around your home screens, just press and hold them until they get the green frame around them and then you can remove them or drop them where you like.

Quickly double tap the screen when viewing an image or on a web page and zoom in and out without using the pinch technique

For those of you looking for a USB cable to charge or sync your Eris, you can use any standard mini-USB cables you may already own. The Verizon ones look a little different but they will all work.

You can snap a picture by either pressing the track ball or by pressing anywhere on the screen.

If you are a former Blackberry user, say goodbye to battery pulls!  The equivalent of a Blackberry soft reset is just powering off your device and turning on again!

Also it may help to browse the complete HTC Droid Eris Manual found here.

For those of you not patient enough to wait for Verizon to roll out the 2.0.1 update, today is your lucky day. Not only can the Motorola Droid finally be rooted, the incremental update to the Android OS can be applied manually, and it’s as easy as 1-2-3. Of course there is a disclaimer that we take no responsibility if something happens to go awry.

First let’s talk about the update, which comes to us from AllDroid. Download the zip file from the forum post, rename it to update.zip, and place it on your microSD card. Power your droid off, and turn it back on while holding the “X” button. After the “/!\” symbol appears, press the volume up and camera button, then follow the onscreen instructions. Here is what you get in the 2.0.1 update.

Next up is is the rooting of the Droid, which again comes from AllDroid in the form of another zip file and is applied in the same manner. Note that this is for adb access and you can’t yet run apps from the Android Market that require root.
