The wait is finally over for GSM HTC Hero owners! According to HTC, the Android 2.1 upgrade for the GSM HTC Hero will start hitting you device today. Over the past month, HTC has been busy rolling out Android 2.1 it’s CDMA devices in the U.S. market such as the Droid Eris and Sprint Hero.

On June 4, 2010 to open up the wireless software update, the main update function as follows: Android 2.1 operating system upgrade!

System will continue to send updates prompt, when you receive a system prompt as long as you can by clicking Download or wireless network connection 3G/GPRS way to complete your phone system updates. Note: We recommend you to choose to have free Wi-Fi environment, download the update. If you are currently using 3G network, the download may have to pay the additional cost carriers, please make sure to have unlimited Internet access rates apply for rentals before use.

The latest Android 2.1 update is now official and available for the Sprint HTC Hero. It’s can be found on Sprint’s Web site, well sort of. It’s listed as being released today on Sprint’s support page, though the download link as of this posting is still not there.

Note: That upgrade will wipe your phone, so make sure all your important data is backed up.

A new leaked document from Sprint confirms the pending release of Android 2.1 for the HTC Hero and Samsung Moment. Both upgrades will be PC-based (not OTA) and will likely require a wipe of your device.The upgrades are not OTA because the Android 2.1 packages are too large (80 MB for Moment, 117 MB for Hero) for their OTA servers.

The document claims the Samsung Moment will receive Android 2.1 beginning late yesterday and the HTC Hero will get it the first week of May. These dates to tend to change quite often, but both upgrades have been tested and are ready to go.

The files and instructions to perform a manual update will be posted on Sprint’s site when they are available.

AdMob released their February 2010 Mobile Metrics report recently which included some interesting findings. You can see the traffic separated into three categories: smartphones, feature phones and mobile internet devices so we can see the relative growth in each category over the past year.

Below are some key findings from the report:

In February 2010, smartphones accounted for 48% of AdMob’s worldwide traffic, up from 35% in February 2009. The strong growth of iPhone and Android traffic, fueled by heavy application usage, was primarily responsible for the increase. In absolute terms, smartphone traffic increased 193% over the last year.
Android was the fastest growing operating system in the AdMob network year-over-year. Android’s share of smartphone requests increased from 2% in February 2009 to 24% in February 2010. The top five Android devices worldwide, by traffic, were the Motorola Droid, HTC Dream, HTC Hero, HTC Magic, and the Motorola CLIQ.

Since everything is broken out by category we can see the top ten phones for the United States. As you can see, Android accounted for 7 of the top 10 (see chart below).

Last but certainly not least,, the iPhone OS and Android are extremely close in the United States when it comes to share of AdMob requests. Android reached an all time high of 42% compared to iPhone’s 44%. Could Android become the leading mobile operating system in the AdMob network very shortly? I think so!

Are you looking for a decent night time clock for your Android device with many great functions?Â Bedside 3.0 developed by ï»¿Daniel Velazco (check out his website here) may be the ticket.Â Bedside 3.0 is a dimmed night clock, and while its open, turns off all sound and vibrate notifications, with the exception of calls (volume is the last set ringer volume), so you can get your sweet dreams without worrying! Oh, and speaking ofÂ SweetDreams, an Android Developers Challenge 2 winner which everyone was hot for, Bedside 3.0 actually has more customization features albeit a slightly different type of app.Â So far, the user reviews for SweetDreams are a little less than stellar as well but I’m sure in time that will be a great application as well.

The good news is Bedside 3.0 is really a great night time clock but the bad news is that it only works on Android 1.6 and above so for now at least it won’t work on the likes of the HTC Droid Eris or the HTC Hero.Â Also the soft button lights on the bottom of the Droid, Milestone and Nexus One remain illuminated, which can be bright for some.Â Luckily if your phone is rooted there is a fix to to shut them off.Â You can find the QR Scan Code below or search for “LEDS Hack” on Android Market.

Give Bedside 3.0 a try, I am using it nightly on my Motorola Droid and can’t say enough good things about it. Search for “Bedside” on Android Market or use the QR Scan Code below.

You can file this in the rumor mills but BGR is reporting a source close to HTC as saying that while Google will be selling an AT&T 3G-compatible Nexus One directly through theirÂ web store , the actual AT&T device will be the HTC Desire. AT&T users will now have HTCâ€™s Sense UI, but the physical attributes of the device might change from the HTC Desire that weâ€™ve seen to date. They were told to expect the HTC Desire around May or June.

As for Sprint, they will be carrying the HTC Hero2 which will a slightly modified HTC Legend. No release date for the Sprint HTC Hero2 as of yet.

This is rumor, but looks to make perfect sense in an Android sort of way.

There are rumors floating around that the European HTC Hero will receive an update to Android 2.1 in February. Since nothing official has been announced, take it with a grain of salt. Here are the expected changes:

Android 2.1 is much faster
One interesting option is a preview of desktops, you can zoom out two
Finders as pages in your browser. Effect. Effectively reduce the deskop,
brillant view.
Icons have clear coat
At the bottom of the menu we have: phone, menu, contacts
HTC added a nice transition when you quit the application and move around
the options.
Lock screen is not rounded.
Faster-running HTC keyboard.
New widgets from HTC.
Improved flashplayer. Operates smoothly.
Graphic change in the gallery and video player
We have more RAM. About 130-140mb after killing the process.

Sprint posted a tweet on Twitter that they are going to skip Android 1.6 and 2.0 and go right to Android 2.1 for the HTC Hero and Samsung Moment. I guess they got tired of being behind with Android updates!

They are saying the update will occur sometime in the first half of 2010.

The Sprint HTC Hero and the T-Mobile myTouch3G both finished in the top spot for their respective carriers in the latest Consumer Reports ratings for smartphones.Â No Android phone were rated for Verizon, presumably because the Motorola Droid and HTC Eris just came to market and were not available for testing (We know the results would have been much different, wink, wink!).Â The Apple iphone 3GS was tops for AT&T.

Both devices got an excellent rating for navigation, web browsing and multimedia.

Sprint HTC Hero – A very good smart phone loaded with intriguing features and capabilities.

T-Mobile myTouch3G – A high-scoring smart phone loaded with intriguing features and capabilities. A very good choice for Web browsing addicts–and even some corporate users.

If you are an HTC Hero user, you will be happy to see these pictures! An HTC Hero has been seen running Android 2.1 (your eyes do notÂ deceiveÂ you, not Android 1.6 or even 2.0)

Android 2.1 is going to be a minor update to Android 2.0, which is currently only available on the Motorola Droid.

Since we see Android 2.1 running on an HTC hero, you can safely assume it can run on older devices such as the myTouch3G and T-Mobile G1.
