AT&T announced the rollout of 4g LTE to eleven new markets today including some of the bigger ones such as NYC metro, Los Angeles and San Francisco. With these newer markets, AT&T now has 4G LTE available in 26 total markets.

AT&T announced via Twitter that its version of the Samsung Galaxy S II will be available Oct. 2 for $199 with a two-year contract and a minimum $15 data plan.

AT&T’s version of the Galaxy S II differs slightly from Sprint’s or T-Mobiles in that it sports a 4.3-inch display. It has the same dual-core 1.2GHz processor and here are the full specs:

AT&T is reassuring customers that all of their 2011 line-up of Android devices will indeed see an upgrade to Gingerbread.

Recently, the Motorola Atrix 4G received a Gingerbread update and more devices such as the HTC Inspire 4G, Samsung Infuse 4G, Samsung Captivate, LG Phoenix and Pantech Crossover will also see updates in do time.

It’s great to see AT&T committing so much time and energy to Android when they were once believed to be an Apple fan boy when Android was just getting started.

AT&T Customers to Enjoy Gingerbread

Android 2.3 Debuted in the AT&T Portfolio with HTC Status, All Post-paid Android Smartphones Released in 2011 Planned to Receive 2.3 Upgrade

AT&T* confirmed that upgrades to the Android™ 2.3 (Gingerbread) platform are planned for all post-paid Android smartphones already introduced this year.

Motorola ATRIX™ 4G users will receive an update to Android 2.3 beginning today and HTC Inspire™ 4G users will receive the update in the coming weeks.

Motorola ATRIX 4G update will also provide the ability to download applications from third-party stores.

HTC Status™ arrived in stores July 17, the first AT&T smartphone running Android 2.3.

Upgrade Details

Customers who purchased an Android smartphone from AT&T introduced in 2011 can expect to receive an update to Android 2.3. All of these devices are planned to be upgraded from Android 2.2 to Android 2.3, also referred to as Gingerbread. In addition, Samsung Captivate™ owners will be able to upgrade to Gingerbread.

Delivery methods will vary by device. Whenever possible, upgrades are delivered over-the-air (OTA), however in some cases the size of the file needed to install the update will require the user to connect via Wi-Fi or connect the phone to a PC to install the update. Factors such as manufacturer-defined software and other device performance improvements result in each device requiring a separate update which will vary in timing.

Beginning today and continuing over the next few weeks, Motorola ATRIX 4G users will be prompted to install the update. To download the update, users must be connected via Wi-Fi. In August, HTC Inspire 4G users will be notified that the update is available and can be downloaded when connected to a Wi-Fi network. AT&T smartphone users can access at any one of the company’s more than 26,000 Wi-Fi hotspots at no cost.

The HTC Status (aka the “Facebook phone”) is official and will launch on AT&T this summer. Pricing and availability were not announced.

The Status is more integrated with Facebook than your probably used to on Android. There is a Facebook button at the bottom of the keyboard, which gives you one-touch access for sharing images, links, your status, news and the like. It also glows when you’re doing something that you can post with the button, so there’s no confusion.

The HTC Status also has a modified version of Sense 3.0.

Beginning this summer, AT&T will begin deploying its 4G LTE network. The first five cities in AT&T’s LTE rollout will be:

AT&T plans on adding 10 or more markets in the second half of 2011 as well, covering 70 million people by year’s end. Currently, AT&T doesn’t have any LTE devices to make good use of their network.

Samsung and AT&T have announced the Samsung Infuse 4G. The Infuse 4G comes with a huge 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen, the largest on AT&T and yet it is only 8.9mm in thickness. It comes with Android 2.2 Froyo but should get a Gingerbread update in no time!

Today AT&T entered a deal with Deutsche Telekom to acquire T-Mobile USA. The deal is valued at 39 billion between cash and stocks. Also part of the deal, Deutsche Telekom gets an equity stake of the company or about 8% ownership in the company. The deal will take about a year to finalize and stills needs regulatory approval. The hope of the merger is to build one super network.

AT&T’s acquisition of T-Mobile USA provides an optimal combination of network assets to add capacity sooner than any alternative, and it provides an opportunity to improve network quality in the near term for both companies’ customers. In addition, it provides a fast, efficient and certain solution to the impending exhaustion of wireless spectrum in some markets, which limits both companies’ ability to meet the ongoing explosive demand for mobile broadband.

International long distance usage from the United States and Puerto Rico to Japan

Upon receiving their wireline bill, customers may call AT&T to receive adjusted calling for up to 60 minutes. In other words, no charges for up to 60 minutes of call time from the United States to Japan between March 11 and March 31.

For any of the above activity, customers will either see no charges reflected on their monthly statement, or they will see a full credit applied to their statement for activity between March 11 and March 31.

Pre-sale start February 13th, the phone will be available in stores March 6 or earlier
Minimum Data plan costing $15 per month
You can purchase the Motorola Atrix 4G and Laptop Dock as a package for $499.99, on contract with a $100 rebate.
An Entertainment Access Kit is available for $199.
The Laptop dock by itself costs $499.99 so you are better off getting it with the phone.
