Yesterday Apple held a press conference which was mainly to reveal new iPods and the new Apple TV. Also, Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, took some shots at Google and Android. He announced that Apple was activating 230,000 devices a day. Last month Eric Schmidt, the CEO of Google, announced that Google was activating over 200,000 new devices a day and growing. Steve Jobs didn’t believe that those numbers were for real. He said at the press conference “We think that some of our friends are counting upgrades in their numbers.”
That is clearly an accusation aimed for Google. He also said, “we think we are ahead of everyone”.
Today, a Google spokesperson responded to this claim,
“The Android activation numbers do not include upgrades and are, in fact, only a portion of the Android devices in the market since we only include devices that have Google services.”
Obviously Steve Jobs claim was inaccurate. Jobs also took quite a few shots at Google during the press conference. Maybe he should get his facts in order before making such comments.
In all fairness, no one really knew what Google counted for activations, so I guess it was an honest mistake. Or not?[Fortune, Engadget]
