As you know, the Verizon Motorola Droid Android 2.1 update has started rolling but many haven not received the OTA update yet and quite frankly, don’t like to wait! Well, you’re in luck, you can now update manually.
Manually Update Droid to Android 2.1:
STEP 1
Download the update from one of the links below. (Mac users: Don’t use Safari as it may try to extract the files rather than just download them.)
STEP 2
Rename the file to update.zip.
STEP 3
Put the file in the root (main directory) of your microSD card.
STEP 4
With your Droid turned off, hold down the letter “x” on the keyboard and then hold down the power button. You will see a triangle with an exclamation point inside.
STEP 5
Press the volume up button and the camera button at the same time. (This is a bit tricky and make take a number of tries.)
STEP 6
You will now be in the bootloader. Choose “update from .zip file” and choose the update using the D-Pad. Let your Droid chug away and do what it needs to.
That is really all there is to it. You can now enjoy Android 2.1. Have fun and do remember, you are doing this at your own risk! Also, by installing this update, if your Droid was previously rooted you will lose root until Android 2.1 has been rooted for the Droid.
