Complete Phone and Fax Service for Mobile Professionals

We are all waiting patiently for the update to Android 2.1 and Engadget has gotten word from Verizon’s testing department on some of the improvements we can expect.

  • It’s based on Android 2.1. The build currently being circulated is identified as 2.1 version 1, mirroring the update just pushed to the Nexus One last week.
  • Google Goggles is now pre-installed (no matter how unhelpful it may be).
  • The browser’s now multitouch enabled, just like Google Maps 3.4. Huzzah! No Flash, but then again, we weren’t really expecting that.
  • Interestingly, the home screen’s still got the same look as 2.0.1, meaning it doesn’t adopt the Nexus One’s rotating 3D grid of app icons — it’s still got the pull-up drawer tab at the bottom.
  • No active wallpapers. Bummer!
  • The news and weather widgets introduced on the Nexus One are included. Maybe certain capabilities of 2.1 are going to be restricted to devices with minimum performance benchmarks?

There is still now word on a release date but the sooner the better!

A lot of folks have been excited about Swype, the “not yet available” keyboard that allows you to drag your fingers to keys as you type. It’s definitely convenient for one handed ‘typing’ and for some people Swype really works. We’ve seen videos of Swype in action (I actually use it and love it!) and even told you how to get Swype yourself, but most Android users are unaware of this convenient “one hand” typing keyboard.

There are now rumors swirling around that are saying that the myTouch 3G 1.2 will include the Swype keyboard out of the box. I for one would welcome another keyboard option when unpacking my phone!

Google Maps has been updated to Version 3.4.0 for the Motorola Droid and gives you multi-touch while zooming in and out on your favorite maps. Go get it while it’s hot!

The Samsung Galaxy I5700 Spica is on tap for and Android 2.1 update. The device was launched in November 2009 with Android 1.5. The Samsung Galaxy I5700 is considered a mid-level device with decent specs but currently isn’t available in the US.

Seesmic for Android has been updated and now supports multiple accounts.  Seesmic has arguably become the free Twitter client of choice for the Android platform, and now with multiple account support it can possibly overtake the other big dogs in the market both free and paid.  To date, it has about 100,000 downloads and counting. In my opinion, it’s the best free Twitter app for Android and surpasses many of the paid Twitter apps in both style and functionality. If you are a Twitter user, you need to give Seesmic a try. You won’t be disappointed!

Two new key features of this update as outlined by founder Loic Le Meur of Seesmic:

  • pinch zooming capabilities
